Alright y’all, this is a topic I’m stoked to talk about. If you’ve ever seen any photos, products, etc. in the wedding industry, you’ve probably noticed that most of it revolves around two people: one bride wearing a wedding gown, and one groom wearing a suit. Even though that is NOT what every wedding/elopement looks like!
So today, I wanted to give you a bunch of elopement ideas for your elopement outfits: ideas other than a bride wearing a white dress & a groom wearing a suit. I mean come on, are we reallyyyyy all still in love with that traditional idea (if you’re a bride & a groom)? And are we REALLY going to just exclude anybody who’s not a bride & groom from the wedding outfit industry?!
Let’s get into some ideas for what to wear for your elopement, no matter your gender identity, sexuality, or who you love! I also just want to open your mind up to other possibilities and make sure you know you don’t have to follow “tradition” or what you “normally” see in the industry. Let’s make your elopement outfits unique AF and personal to YOU!
After I give you some ideas, then I’ll get into where you can go to find your outfits!
First off, let’s just brainstorm all kinds of unique elopement outfit ideas that you can look into! Gone are the days of only buying white dresses & black suits – you can wear whatever makes you feel the most like you + highlights your best self.
No matter if you want to wear white or something colorful, jumpsuits are SUCH a fun way to go for elopement attire. They’re super comfy and give you lots of room to move your legs, and can make you look just “classy” enough to make you feel bomb without sacrificing comfort.
Plus, lots of jumpsuits have pockets – 10/10 recommend having pockets on your elopement day to carry around your little essentials (or just to have somewhere to keep your hands)!
If you still want to wear a dress for your elopement but want to spice it up a little bit, go for a two-piece dress! Whether you buy a matching set or your buy a top & bottom individually, two-pieces add a unique touch to any outfit because they’re juuust different enough to stand out from a “regular” wedding dress.
Find a top with a cutout + sleeves + material you LOVE, whether that’s long-sleeve, tanktop, a deep V neck, lace edges, etc. and pair it with a simple skirt. Decide whether you want a tighter, more form-fitting look or a more loose, flowy bottom to move around in!
Again, if you want to wear a dress but want to make your outfit more unique + fitting to you, find a colored or patterned dress!! Colored elopement dresses are sooo underrated in my opinion – pick out your fav color or the color that makes you feel your best. This gives you another way to create a beautiful elopement color palette, and match with any florals/decor/etc. you might have!
Along the same lines, if you want to wear a suit but aren’t a fan of the classic black or gray, pick out a color or pattern!!
If you want a pattern, florals or plaid are a great way to go if you want to keep it simple & non-distracting, but still add some spice to an otherwise “normal” suit.
And if you want color, choose your fav color or whatever color will go best with the location you’re eloping at! You don’t have to wear one color for your top and bottom if you don’t want to, also – you can totally mix & match shades of the same color or colors within the same palette!
Pro tip: if you’re wearing a solid-colored suit, make sure it doesn’t blend in with the background of your elopement location! For example, if you’re eloping somewhere in the forest with deep greens, avoid wearing deep green so you don’t get lost in the trees in your photos.
Accessories are a SUPER fun way to add unique touches to any outfit, no matter what actual clothes you’re wearing! There are way more accessory opportunities than just your rings + a pair of earrings or plain ties.
If you want to add a super cool piece to your hairdo, wear some sort of crown! Yes, you can totally go for a flower crown, but you could also go for a crown with more of a jewelry feel.
Hannah wore a gorgeous keepsake crown with her white two-piece for her & Ben’s elopement – check it out below!!
Find any family heirloom pieces you might have, or buy some gorgeous keepsake jewelry to add to your outfit & keep afterward! I love buying high-quality jewelry from small local businesses.
Bolo ties are such a simple way to make your outfit more unique!
If you want to wear a normal tie but still want it to be a littleeee out of the norm, wear a skinny tie!
Patterned ties are my FAV – wear a tie with floral patterns, leaves, simple shapes, etc. It’ll add so much to a simple or solid-colored suit!
Jackets are a super easy way to add variety to any outfit – customized denim jackets, leather jackets, colored jackets, whatever you want! Find a jacket that looks great with your outfit, but also find an outfit that you can wear with or without a jacket (so you don’t have to wear the jacket the entire time).
If you’re on a little more of a budget, there are SO many amazing budget options nowadays!!
You can thrift your entire outfit or parts of it – I have had sooo many couples who have found pieces of their outfits at Goodwill or TJMaxx! Thrift stores have so much gold if you keep looking & are at the right place at the right time.
If you want another place to buy secondhand, you can actually find some gems on Facebook Marketplace once in a while, too!
You can also buy pieces of your outfit from department stores to save a little money! Ben (below) bought his suit from Target and it looked amazing + high-end!
Etsy also has so so many options for elopement attire, from dresses to jumpsuits to suits! You can find pieces that have been worn before, or brand new pieces that are handmade by small businesses.
Finally, here are some great places to look to find your perfect elopement outfits!
