Couples who craft a day that feels perfectly true to them >>> everything else. Amanda and Kyle didn’t let tradition, expectations, or norms define their day; didn’t force themselves to fit into the “elopement” or “wedding” box. Instead, they celebrated in the most authentic fashion they could think of: with a beautiful blend of both, spending portions of the day with their guests while also getting some quiet alone time. Documenting these two as they explored the Cascade Lakes + tied the knot with a micro wedding ceremony at Soda Creek was everything, and afterward, they went back to their Airbnb for the most magical reception with loved ones. Cheers to the couples who don’t care what anyone thinks, and sticks to what feels right in their hearts. . . you’re what this world needs.

Y’all, I honestly feel like the Cascade Lakes are one of the most underrated areas in the Pacific Northwest. When you think of beautiful places in Oregon, you usually think of Mount Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, or Crater Lake National Park—all of which offer their own unique magic and beauty, of course—but nobody ever thinks of the Cascade Lakes. So when I was planning this day with A + K, I was beyond thrilled that we’d get to explore this incredibly scenic area of central Oregon that I love so much! We ventured around Bend, Sunriver, Soda Creek. . . pretty much seeing all the best sights + as many mountain views as we could in one day. Even their Airbnb was gorgeous, right on a little lake with crystal-clear reflections of the blue sky, trees, and clouds. Truly the warm, soul-filling autumn day of my dreams with good, good humans.

For anyone not from the PNW, it might sound a little weird to have your wedding ceremony at a campground—but when the campground looks like this, it’s no surprise that A + K felt it was just the right spot to become husband and wife. Soda Creek Campground is one of my personal favorite hidden gems in the Deschutes National Forest, super close to Sparks Lake with a secluded, private feel. The mountain views are absolutely to die for, spectacular from every angle especially with the lush greenery and forests in the distance. It makes for an amazing ceremony location not just because of the views, but because it’s easy to access, and is doable for guests with certain mobility restrictions.
Amanda and Kyle laid down a blanket to be their “aisle,” with just enough space on either side for a few loved ones to witness their stunning mountain-view vow exchange. I hope this goes to show you just how simple your elopement or micro wedding can be, whether it’s in your family’s backyard or out in the rugged alpine wilderness; all these two had were the people they loved, spectacular views, and a minimalist floral installation that sprawled across the ground where they stood. I just loved the way they kept things so simple and focused around the natural beauty, yet also added a little sophistication with the neutral, cream tones and bright white florals!

After gathering up groups of their family and friends for portraits in front of the amazing scenery, we ventured off on our own for Amanda + Kyle’s private vow exchange at Sparks Lake—one of my most LOVED elopement locations in central Oregon. Climbing over driftwood and rocky shores, we found the perfect spot down by the water for these two to share a private moment together. I was dying because they played a game of rock paper scissors to decide who read their vows first! Consider this your sign to share your personalized vows privately, and then the traditional ones in front of your guests—so many of my couples have done it this way and been so thankful they had those deeply emotional moments to themselves.

If you thought the best parts of this day were over, think again—because when we arrived back at Amanda and Kyle’s Airbnb, my jaw was absolutely on the floor seeing their reception setup. I knew it was going to be amazing, but actually getting to witness their vision come to life was a magical experience; rows of delicate fairly lights strung above a breathtaking tablescape, draped over guests as they enjoyed an intimate evening full of connection, mouthwatering dishes, and cherished moments I know will last for the rest of their lives. . . what a freaking gift to be a part of. I can’t picture a more blissful end to this day than with the first dance A + K shared under the glow of candlelight, than the sweet toasts given by their guests, or the bonfire once it was dark out. I just know this day will always, always have the most special place in the hearts of everyone present.
I never shy away from shooting after the sun has gone down, once we run out of natural light for the day. In fact, it’s actually one of my favorite times of day to take photos with my couples—here’s why.
